Staying In is a cookbook for a moment in time. One where days have taken on new rhythms – our own worlds feeling smaller as the world outside feels uncertain. It’s often in times like this that the kitchen, and a good meal, can be a welcome solace.

With over 35 recipes, donated by chefs and food writers, and shot by photographer Issy Croker whilst in isolation herself, you’ll find something for morning, afternoon and evening. From the light and bright to the slow and simmering, there’s sourdough crumpets and a springtime carbonara, roast chicken with salsa verde and a flourless chocolate cake. There’s also illustrated how-tos, playlists to keep you company, and simple swaps for when you don’t have quite the right ingredient.

The hope is that Staying In can offer comfort, joy and sustenance when we need it most. But its aim goes beyond that, with all proceeds going to the charity Chefs in Schools’ emergency appeal.

Hackney-based Chefs in Schools work on the ground to transform the health of children through food, food culture and food education in schools, training chefs and kitchen teams to make meals from scratch.

But now, with schools closed and many children without their vital free school meal, the charity have quickly pivoted to providing vulnerable families with weekly lunch boxes. Each box contains enough freshly-prepared lunches for five days, plus cereal and fruit.

Chefs in Schools is helping to coordinate a network of schools, restaurants and volunteers to keep the hot food coming, and to reach more families, but to do this they need money – and quickly.

They have launched an emergency appeal to fund this work. We hope Staying In can help them reach their target so they can continue this work for as long as it’s needed.
